The problem is that if mental speed is to be investigated using factorial techniques, then the method of investigation is predetermined by the method of analysis. Proper scientific research requires the opposite. Factorial procedures need large amounts of data. The most economical way to gather such data is by group testing large numbers of subjects. In a later discussion of this component, Cattell maintains that it affects speed in a broad spectrum of abilities, such as numerical performance, social skills, perceptual speed, and especially mechanical speeds such as writing (p. 107).
