As an example, currently I am conducting a study of online-only news sites in several regions of the United States. Many of these sites are small, run by one or two people. More than a few do not have an office. Sometimes they are units of other organizations, as with a news site housed within a regional transportation agency. Often, they do not even consider what they do to be ‘news production’. Traditional newsrooms may be difficult to access today, but at least they have offices. A researcher knows whom to contact; that person has a phone number with voicemail or, even better, an assistant who can take a message.
In short, telling a good story is not guaranteed, but those undertaking production studies are at least better placed to do so than many others. As the wider cultural economy has undergone profound transformations in respect of production, distribution, and consumption, the once singular tradition of media production research – now dignified, or discarded, as the ‘first wave’ – has rightly needed to be rethought. So, for instance, diverse forms of media work that might earlier have been compartmentalized have become an integral part of wider analyses of cultural labour (Deuze, 2007; Hesmondhalgh and Baker, 2011).
